The arrival of spring and summer often means budding flowers, warmer temperatures, and beautiful gardens, hopefully brimming in coming months with ripe vegetables for the picking. There's something wonderful about growing your own food. But could there be a way to make your garden better? We've heard a lot about composting here at The Dollar Stretcher as a way to boost a garden's spoils. So when Ecotonix agreed to let us review one of their Green Cycler Garden Series Kitchen Countertop Composters, we were really excited. Here's our opinion:
A Little About the Benefits of Composting and the Green Cycler
The Green Cycler website does a wonderful job of providing resources for the gardener who is learning the value of composting. According to their site, using kitchen scrap compost is not only great for the garden, but it also reduces the amount of waste you throw out, and it makes your fruits and vegetables taste better too! Creating compost from kitchen scraps is beneficial for the garden, and it helps garden plants stay healthy too.
The Green Cycler is an easy to use product designed to grind up kitchen scraps to a perfect usable size for compost. It can go on the counter, or it can easily fit in a cabinet and taken out when needed. It has suction cups on the bottom, a crank arm on the side to grind the scraps, and a drawer at the bottom to catch the ground scraps. The ground food scraps in the drawer can then be emptied outside to an outside composter or hole in the ground, so that rich compost can develop.
What We Liked About the Green Cycler
One of the Dollarstretchers here actually tried the Green Cycler out at home, and there were so many things she really liked about it! She belongs to a fresh produce CSA, so she always has lots of kitchen scraps for her compost. She actually experimented and left ground kitchen scraps in the Green Cycler drawer to see how long it would take to notice a smell. After an impressive 11 days, she finally noticed a smell! The Green Cycler kept the scraps and the smell contained in the drawer for a good while. She also ground up many different types of vegetables and fruits, and the Green Cycler never had a problem shredding anything she tried, even avocado pits!
Another big plus with the Green Cycler is that the blades and the drawer are all dishwasher safe. If you've found that some kitchen scraps have gotten a little messy in the drawer or on the grinding blades, you can take both out of the Green Cycler and put them right in the dishwasher for cleaning. And if you find that the filter starts to smell, you can put that in the sun to take away the smell too!
What to Think About before Purchasing a Green Cycler
The first thing to think about when you're looking at the Green Cycler is that it does take up counter space, not a lot of space, but if you are tight on space in your kitchen or your countertop, this would probably be a consideration.
The second thing to think about is the cost. A countertop composter can be expensive, but the benefits of adding good compost to your garden are numerous! If you are the type of person who doesn't regularly take your kitchen scraps out to be composted, then this kitchen composter is a great way to help you to remember to take the scraps, plus shred them and store them too. Plus the Green Cycler allows the scraps to break down faster, and it allows for composting on a much smaller scale. These benefits may outweigh the cost of a kitchen scrap shredder like the Green Cycler!
And that's it! Overall, we found the Green Cycler to be a great tool for reducing kitchen waste and also adding valuable kitchen scrap compost to your outside bin or compost hole. Plus, Green Cycler has graciously agreed to give away one Green Cycler composter to one of our lucky readers! We will be working with a group of great bloggers during this giveaway too, so be sure to check out their websites as well!a Rafflecopter giveaway
