Mom's Medication

I am in need of a source or sources for a Prilosec prescription for my elderly mother. Since we are on a fixed income, the prices locally are prohibitive. Please help us.

Try Manufacturer

For the person that needs PRILOSEC. Call Astra (800-355-6044) or Zeneca (800-424-3727) and ask about the "Indigent Patient Program." Explain your needs.
Rita G

Editor's note: a call to AstraZeneca informed us that a healthcare professional will need to follow-up your inquiry with a call and medication would be delivered through your doctor's office (not directly to your home).

World SHARE

I don't know if this would help with this medication, but it is worth a try. Try World SHARE Pharmacy at 800-542-1110. It is open to everyone. Place your order by phone, fax or e-mail. They confirm with the doctor and it is delivered to your home. Shipping is only $1 on any size order and you can save up to 70% on:

  • Prescription drugs

  • Over-the-counter medicines

  • Herbal remedies

  • Personal care items (shampoo, lotion, oils etc.)

I personally have not used this pharmacy but people that don't have insurance sure love it!

Editor's note: a call to World SHARE found that they can deliver throughout the US. They can also deliver to Canada if the prescription is written by a US doctor.

Patient Assistance Programs

There is a great nationwide program to help people of all ages with limited incomes get the medication needed. A lot of drug manufacturers are sponsoring "Patient Assistance Programs" and supply the medicines free to qualifying people. The majority of people who qualify just aren't aware of this program. This has really helped me, as I have no insurance, and my medicine is very expensive, and I would not be able to get it without the P.A.P. program. For details, requirements, and a short, simple application-go to:www.themedicineprogram.com. It has been a God-send to me, and I hope it will be of help to those in need.

Some Possibilities

Drug costs are a main expense for many seniors. First, check with your mothers doctor and see if he can help out with some samples. It may help if you contact the doctor and ask him/her as patients are hesitant to ask for this help. Drug companies provide these samples and he may ask for more from the rep if he knows of her need. Some states have low cost prescription programs based on income. Check into elderly services for your area. Senior Services are available in almost every county and state, few people know of or use them. If you have trouble locating services, find a senior center or check social services for your area. Your pharmacist may have some information on low cost programs for your county or state. The pharmacist will also have the addresses and maybe a phone number for the company that manufacturers the drug your mother is using. You can write/call and see if they offer assistance, it does happen. They may offer it at their cost, try it! I would also contact AARP and check into their mail order pharmacy. I am not familiar with on line pharmacy options but that may be something to check on.

Talk to Local Pharmacist

Try you local neighborhood pharmacy, I work in one and we usually try to give cash customers a very good price in the hopes that they will become regulars. Also there is a prescription program called EPIC which is for the elderly and has a copay, which range from $7.00 to $23.00 it is passed on their income.

RxAssist

I just came across an interesting website I'd like to share, in case you are not already aware of it. It is entitled RxAssist at http://womenshealth.med.ucla.edu/. It is designed to help doctors request free medications for their patients. Maintained by the UCLA-Iris Cantor Women's Health Center. Sponsored by Volunteers in Health Care, A National Program Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Here's another site www.needymeds.com.
