Homemade Hair De-Tangler?

Do you or your readers have any great tips or homemade solutions for detangling hair? I have very fine shoulder length hair that goes into a bird nest mess as soon as I start to shampoo. I'm so tired of spending good money on products that do not work. Besides I'm running out of products to try!

An Ionic Hair Brush Helps

I don't have a homemade solution for Debbie's question but I will tell you what works for me. For Christmas this year, I got an ionic hairbrush. It is wonderful. I get my hair highlighted (like most women) and my hair is always tangled when I get out of the shower. I used to have to pile on the conditioner to even try to get a brush through it. And when I didn't have conditioner, what a nightmare.

Anyway my husband got me this ionic hairbrush. It is the most amazing thing. Now after I shower I just turn on the brush and brush my hair and the tangles come out with one or two brush strokes. It works well on dry and windblown hair as well.

I also have the ionic hair dryer to go with my brush. They have done wonders for my hair. We got the ionic hairbrush and hairdryer at Brookstone. It is a store in the mall we live near. If there is none in your area they have a web site www.brookstone.com. On the front page there is a place to search their web site. Just type in "ionic hairbrush" and it will take you right to it.

Condition and Comb in the Shower

I have had long hair most of my life and know this problem.
What I do: I shampoo as normal. Then I use a good conditioner, and keep a brush in the shower. After conditioning and with the conditioner still in my hair, I carefully work out the tangles with the brush. It works much better with the conditioner in there. Then I rinse the hair in the shower water. I carefully towel dry my hair so it doesn't tangle again. My hair is easy to comb out after this.

"Leave In" Conditioner

I am Italian and have always had very curly, wiry hair. When I was little, I would scream and scream when she tried to brush it after a bath. My mother's hairdresser told her to mix 1/3 regular conditioner with 2/3 water in a spray bottle and use as a "leave in conditioner" for after a shower. You don't need much and it works just like the Johnson and Johnson's tangle formula.

Diluted Fabric Softener May Help

I would use a liquid fabric softener diluted with water. You may try applying it with your hand after a shampoo and then rinse or maybe try it in a spray bottle and misting your hair lightly after it is towel dried. Also you shouldn't tangle your hair after a shampoo by rubbing it with a towel. You may need to experiment with the amount of water you add so if your hair gets oily.

Insights From Experience

I have long, fine hair and this is what works for me:

• Use a lightweight conditioning shampoo (I love Giovanni's shampoo, found in a health food store. Slightly pricey, but a little goes a long way).
  
  
• Never pile your hair on top of your head and lather. Instead, lean over and massage the shampoo (just a little! about quarter-size dollop and rub hands together) with fingertips only (no nails!) into the scalp (where the oil collects) and run the suds down length of hair. Rinse with lukewarm water.
  
  
• After showering, wrap hair in towel, turban style, to get out most of the water. Never, ever "towel dry" hair, you'll just ruffle the cuticle of the hair strands making a big tangled mess.
  
  
• Use a spray-in leave-on conditioner (again Giovanni's makes a good product, or just mix instant conditioner 50/50 with water into a spray bottle and shake before use!) concentrating on ends of hair.
  
  
• Use a wide-toothed comb or vent brush to detangle hair. Starting at the bottom of each hair section, detangle working your way up to your scalp. Please don't drag a brush (or comb!) from the top down, you'll only tear hair that's more fragile when wet and it'll take twice as long and with more pain to detangle.
  
  
• Last but not least, either air-dry hair and dry at the last minute or just dry until most of the water is out. I never use blow dryer.
