Forty percent of teens to spend more than last year this holiday season, according to Junior Achievement survey. Poll shows more than one third of teens to spend more than $125 shopping this season.

Colorado Springs, Colorado. With American consumers fully into the swing of the holiday shopping season, more than two thirds of teens (71 percent) say they have the power to influence their parents buying decisions. According to a new, nationwide poll of 982 students, ages 13-18, conducted by Junior Achievement, 35 percent of teen respondents say they plan to spend more than $125 on gifts this year. When asked if they planned to spend more money than last year, 40 percent of teens said so, with another 48 percent saying they would spend about the same. Only 12 percent of teens said they planned to spend less.

Students are planning to spend plenty of their own money this year, too. Slightly more than half (51 percent) of students say they hold a job during the school year, giving teens some consumer spending punch to drive into a still-recovering U.S. economy.

The poll also showed that girls are likely to spend more money on their holiday spending than boys are. Thirty percent of boys say they will spend more than $125 on presents this year, while 41 percent of girls say the same.

The JA Interprise Poll on Holiday Spending by Teens was conducted in classrooms nationwide October 15, 2003 to December 10, 2003 by Junior Achievement. The survey is part of an ongoing series of surveys on students' views of economic issues.
