Some Don't De-Value as Much

Some cars just don't de-value. Take Toyota for example. When I shop for a nice two to three year Toyota Camry or Corolla, the price is only $2000 off of the same car, with the same options new! Why not buy new, and drive it less than say 30,000 miles (typical mileage for two years on a used car.) Drive it say 10 to 12K a year and go for the extra year of service.

There are Exceptions

I take exception to the writer's assuming that everyone who buys a new car is status-conscious. I happen to be a single woman who knows nothing about car repairs. Nor do I have a car I can borrow if mine is in the shop. I want a dependable ride that I can drive relatively problem free for many years. I bought a new Honda Accord for $12,000. I drove it for 13 years with no repair bills, save consumables and one or two minor repairs under $100. Then I sold it for $1200. Two and a half years ago, I bought a new Honda CR-V. I plan on driving this problem free at least 10 years and selling it for a fair sum.

Some of us want something we can just turn the key and drive, without thinking of there being a problem. Both times I saved and put down half of the price as down payment, and next time, I hope to pay cash. There are exceptions to every rule, and no one "rule" is right for everyone. The peace of mind I have driving my newer car outweighs any money I can save buying a used car.
