Grade B Savings on Eggs
In a recent article in the January 2008 issue of The HomeEconomiser Newsletter, we presented several strategies for saving money on the purchase of eggs at the grocery store.
We just recently stumbled across another great money saver. The Kroger stores nationwide (click here for a list of all of the different Kroger store names) give their dairy managers the discretion to take eggs from broken dozens and repackage them at the store. They sell these Grade B eggs at a reduced price (99 cents per dozen at the stores in our area). That alone is a huge savings with regular prices as high as $3 per dozen. We spot checked stores in Arizona (personally), Indiana and Utah (by phone). The majority of the stores repackaged the eggs into Grade B packages. Other managers chose to simply discount the eggs after they removed the broken ones.

But the deal gets even better when you weigh the eggs. Because the grocery store takes eggs from various dozens and combines them into their Grade B cartons, the weight of the eggs varied from carton to carton.
Out of the 10 dozen we purchased:
- 5 weighed in as Extra Large
- 3 weighed in as Large
- 2 weighed in as Medium
Some of the eggs were plain white, others were brown and a few were fancy signature brown eggs (the most expensive).
Check with your grocer's dairy manager and ask what they do with eggs from broken cartons. They may have a policy of reducing the price and you'll find great savings. They may not have a policy yet, and you can encourage them to establish one like Kroger's.
