How to Clean a Stone Fireplace

At the end of last winter, I promised myself that I'd clean the front of our stone fireplace. Well, we are nearing the holidays, and I still haven't gotten it done. This is because I don't know what to use and how to go about it. Can anyone suggest what's the best way to clean a stone fireplace?

Keep It Dry

I asked my hubby. He suggested a dry, stiff-bristled nylon brush. Wetting it could make the soot settle into the stone and make it tougher to get off.

Before Cleaning, Tarp Off Area

I cleaned my brick fireplace hearth with bathtub cleaner in a spray can from a dollar store and a stiff brush from an automotive store. I was very pleased with the results. Don't forget to use tarps on the floor around it. I used shower curtains from a dollar store. I did not have black soot on the fireplace. It just looked dusty.

Bubbles Did the Trick

My sister cleaned houses for a living and she used (but please test this first) Scrubbing Bubbles® on fireplace stone. This got rid of all the soot from fires burned in the fireplace.

Ammonia and Water Worked for Her

I had the same problem when we moved into our house. I mixed water (60%) and ammonia (40%) in a bucket and used a scrub brush. I was amazed how that took the soot off of the stone. By using this, I did not have suds to worry about. You may want to open a door or window while you are scrubbing.
