The Natural Look
Real tree branches with carpeted platforms look fantastic at the pet store, but the $400 price tag is way out on a limb. Make your own using four thick tree limbs (about 6 inches in diameter and about 5 feet tall) a sheet of 4’x8’ plywood for the base and platforms and a scrap piece of carpet. You can find tree limbs discarded on curbs, out in the country or at the local landfill. You can get discarded carpet samples at decorating and hardware stores, flooring outlets and furniture stores, either free or very inexpensively.
Cover a 3’x3’ plywood square with carpet, stapling securely on the underside. Then cut several platforms and cover these as well with carpet. Next, bolt the tree limbs to the four corners of the base. Then attach the carpeted platforms between the tree limbs in a spiral staircase design, so the cats can climb them like steps. Place the unit by a window for the cats to climb and see out, and they will have fun climbing their “trees” instead of ruining your furniture.
