Create a budget and stick to it. Figure out how much you need for monthly living expenses like food, toiletries and household items. An easy way to do this is to check past receipts. This will also highlight the impulse buys and uncontrolled spending you want to eliminate.
To curb uncontrolled spending, make a list and stick to it. Add things as you use them. For instance, let's say you use a can of tuna today and one three days from now. Add two check marks. Then the day before you shop, count all the check marks and buy that many items to replace what you used. If it's not on the list, it absolutely does not go in your cart, no matter how great a deal or adorable it is. You just have to be able to say "I don't need this today, I can make do" and then make do. If you run short of money on that trip, then don't buy something. Willpower needed here!
