As the second part of a two part series on frugal fitness at home or at the office (part 1 can be found here), Gaiam sent us a Beginner Yoga Kit and a copy of Rodney Yee's Yoga for Your Week to review. When it comes to fitness and relaxation, yoga is a wonderful physical activity. Good for both body and mind, yoga is an all-around great way to relieve stress and build stamina too. So what did we think of Gaiam's Yoga Kit and Rodney Yee's DVD?
A Little About the Kit and the DVD
The Beginner Yoga Kit from Gaiam comes with a yoga mat, a foam brick, a strap, and a yoga workout DVD. The mat is slip-free with printed lines to help with alignment and proper positioning with poses. The brick and strap are also helpful props for proper body alignment and support. And the included DVD, called the Yoga Beginner's Experience, has an A.M. Yoga workout and a Daily Yoga workout, as well as an introduction on how to use the props and an additional meditation preparation.
Why We Loved this Beginner Yoga Kit and the Rodney Yee DVD
From someone who is completely new to yoga, to someone who has been practicing a while, this kit offers options for anyone interested in yoga. I have been practicing yoga for a little while, and I can tell you that I loved the mat. Having the lines truly helped me maintain the best alignment and support for different poses. Plus having the brick and strap as props are also excellent ways to support your body when your hands won't reach. The included dvd is also a great addition to the kit. Not only does it include two yoga workouts, but it also has a separate section explaining the best ways to use the props. The kit truly offers everything you need to get started with a solid yoga practice. I also really liked the separate DVD that Gaiam sent - Yoga for Your Week, with Rodney Yee. This instructional DVD includes five separate Yoga workouts, depending on what type of workout you'd like to do. The included workouts are A.M. Connection, P.M. Release, Energy, Strength, and Flexibility. Each of these five workouts are 20 minutes long.
What to Think About Before Buying a Beginner Yoga Kit or the Rodney Yee DVD
First, make sure to check with your medical professional to ensure that you are physically able to do yoga.
Also, you might try to research a bit on Rodney Yee's teaching style. For some of the workouts, he moves quickly through the poses, so if you are unfamiliar with some poses, you might think about a supplemental dvd to explain the poses further. I have been practicing yoga for a bit, so his teaching style was no problem for me, but depending on your learning style and practice habits, you might consider looking at a few of his short (and free) preview YouTube vidoes on the Gaiam YouTube channel to be sure that you like his style.
And that's it!This kit is a fantastic edition to any at-home fitness routine. The mat and other props are wonderful ways to begin and/or expand on your yoga practice, And Rodney Yee's DVDs are great additions to help with beginning and varying your yoga workouts at home.
